Intent for KS1 to KS2

At Iceni Primary Academy we believe that reading, writing and communication are key life skills; we aim to equip our pupils with the powerful knowledge required to enable them to read with sensitivity and understanding, write with precision and craft, and speak confidently and fluently.  Through the English curriculum children will be supported to develop the skills and knowledge that will enable them to communicate effectively and creatively with the world at large. We aim to foster enjoyment and appreciation of the richness of the English literary heritage and appreciate the true joy of reading.

At Iceni Primary Academy, we intend:

  • To provide a rich and stimulating language environment, integrating reading, writing, speaking and listening, drama and role play.
  • To provide an environment where pupils are encouraged to construct and convey meaning, both in speech and writing, of factual, imaginary and personal experiences.
  • To provide opportunities for pupils to become confident, competent and expressive users of the language with a developing knowledge of how it works.
  • To provide opportunities for pupils to be reflective users of language, able to analyse and evaluate its main features.
  • To foster an enthusiasm for and love of reading for life.
  • To encourage pupils to present their ideas in a variety of forms, both in English and across all curriculum subjects.

By the end of Key Stage 2 at the Iceni Primary Academy pupils will:

  • read and write with confidence, fluency and understanding, orchestrating a range of independent strategies to self-monitor and correct.
