We have a very active Academy Council who hold meetings every fifth week of each half term following a Family Council meeting the previous week. This gives all children the chance to air their views, which are discussed during Family Council, and a decision made as to whether to forward them onto Academy Council. The minutes of this meeting are replied to by Mrs Owner, the Principal of our academy, and the families receive feedback on their ideas; Mrs Owner emails staff involved in helping bring the children’s ideas to fruition and the cycle beings again.
Academy Council initiatives include:
• Macmillan coffee afternoon
• Sponsored obstacle race
• Healthy lunch box scheme
• Inter school football tournament
• Games for wet play
• New playground equipment
• Litter pick
The committees are elected by each Family Council and hold their position for a year; a big focus of PSHE in the first weeks of each academic year is making decisions democratically and the voting aspect of choosing the Chair and Secretary is democracy in action in our academy.
Prefects are chosen by staff and this year we have four! Their role includes sitting on Academy Council, welcoming visitors to school events, laying a wreath at St James’ Church on Remembrance Sunday, assisting with the village litter pick, reporting on Health and Safety around the site and helping make presentations in Celebration Assemblies.
